Pathao, a leading tech startup in Bangladesh with over 10 million users, is set to launch Pathao Pay, a new digital payment wallet with a key feature—Split Payment.
Split Payment design was part of the broader Pathao Pay wallet project.
We designed Split Payment from scratch.
THE PROBLEM
Coordinating payment split is a hassle and can easily spoil the fun
When friends go out, splitting the bill is a pain. People end up juggling multiple apps to calculate who owes what, leading to confusion and stress.

Key challenges during this process were aligning with other ongoing Pathao Pay work and technical limitations.
We addressed these through early feasibility checks, and prioritising tasks with external support.
THE SOLUTION
Users can pay bills with Pathao Pay, then split the transaction with friends—all in one app.
We started by analysing competitor apps in neighbouring Asian markets, as the Bangladeshi market lacked similar features.
This analysis provided insights into the existing landscape and highlighted successful patterns in expense-sharing solutions.
In our solution, the journey begins with making a payment, after which users can choose the "Split Payment" option to divide the bill among friends.

Developing wireframes to high fidelity designs
Iteratively improving designs through prototype testing
In the first iteration of the design, users struggled with sliders to set proportions, so we simplified it by adding an inline edit field and easier logic for splitting.
